you do, or you don't

I never completed my last blog following the State Funeral of the late Sir Clement Arrindell. Everything proceeded as expected and my camera got "attacked" twice. I believe I made comments elsewhere, maybe in captions of photos in the Facebook album. I am not trying to figure out how five [5] new and charged Camera batteries could all get discharged in shooting under 100 photos in my Canon EOS DSLR camera, when one charged battery usually shoot a few hundred photos. Anyway I had a secret battery [not stored with the working set] for deep emergency and that came to the rescue. In the hour break between Government House and the State Funeral Service at Wesley Methodist Church, all five batteries were recharged. I am not surprised that after charging only one battery was used to cover the rest of the Funeral, and taking more photos than at Government House. Some things are just unexplainable, and I am not taking time off my daily routine to explore these "supernatural" phenomenon. Que sera sera.

This is another part blog. It seems like I can't sit down and write one straight uninterrupted piece. I write as it comes to me. I am not one to formulate a plan and create an outline. If on reread I think it kinda harsh, I might rewrite if I can think of the appropriate words. Most times it stand, that is how I see it, right or wrong. I may be right in my sight, but wrong in yours, but I do not have the problem, it is you, and all you have to do  is ... "click", move away and move on from here. But it is human nature to be fast, inquisitive is a better word, and it is all about 'information' these days. Because of our 'fastness', many of us follow up many things, and could end up in 'hell', instead of the 'promised land' with the milk and honey. No problem, we have free will and choice, so we do what we want to, and who vex .....

I must confess that I have now lost my train of thought on my topic "you do, or you don't". I must be getting older and may really need to create that outline and notes, and I guess my cousin "T" will laugh his head off at this, for he does his outlines and notes. I have many friends who are quite vocal, but they are mortally afraid of putting pen to paper. Maybe it is their gift and life assignment to be loquacious. Life and living it, is about our lifetime assignment and the full use of our gifts and talents. I think I am catching up with my train of thoughts again. You either live the life that we might equate to your destiny, or you don't. This discussion is complicated for those who like complication , but pretty simple for those who don't. Actually life boils down to to just that, you either do, or you don't. You are stuck with making the choice, and hopefully making the right decision.

In our world we have different people, who believe a lot of things. Some like us and others not like us. In our West we read a lot of literature from the East. We even do in the West what some of them do in the East, but we are still West. You reading me, right? I am not sure if in the East they do half of what we do in the West. I understand that you could even loose your head if you are not careful. In the West you can loose your head too, but that is usually because you want to acquire information without adequate preparation for the reception of that information. If you want it, then go to it, and stop holding East and West, like fire and water, in your hand. It is all about information and knowledge, and the quest for POWER.

I suspect that photography and the people that make it happen are the same in most respects. Despite their personal beliefs they have to make the "you do, or you don't" decision just like the rest of us all the time. But photography the art and science, the media for information, etc., has many other components that some of us consider, but others don't. Quite a few people are into photography now by default. Some acquired a printer and received a free digital camera. Some are friend's copy cats, and no disrespect is meant to anyone. There are a million ways for someone to get a photographic device, and become a photographer, in the general sense. I am of the view that many of the persons on the face of the planet today are born with a gift of photography, or some aspect of photography. Looking at some historical data, I arrive at the conclusion that Photography is an engine that would drive Praise to God.

Photography helps us to appreciate God's handiwork, from Sunrise to Sunset, and all the creatures that he created in His own Likeness and Image.  Of course some do not believe that there is a God, but some of us do. Some of us appreciate that the beauty we see all around us day and night is God in action. God has also given man the technological ability to capture images of the most beautiful "things" upon the earth, to reproduce in and on other media and for the sustained enjoyment of each other. I believe that no two photographers will ever see and capture the same beautiful model the same way ever. The same model given to many photographers to shoot for a whole day, will never produce the same images. That is the nature of beauty ... it is in the eyes of the beholder, and the viewfinder.

In our world photographers are forced to please the consumers. Give them what they want, not what you want to, or what you like. If you don't shoot the spread how the art director perceives it, you may have to starve. Every photo shoot have their photographer. There is always the right photographer for a photo shoot job. Many guys take on shoots know full well it not their thing. The results are acceptable, but in some parts of the world, we have no choice. It is therefore incumbent upon all photographers to be the best they can ever be at their trade. Update and upgrade and retrain continuously. Make alliances with professional service providers and other professional photographers. If you land a big account don't try to be the king photo man/woman,  maybe your associate or friend from another island [Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica, Bermuda, USA, Canada, UK] could lend a different perspective and unique images. It is never about you getting less money in your pocket. Ask the client about that.

There are more amateur photographer that are just as good as, and even better than some the professional photographers. Some amateur photographers take the art more seriously. They don't spare effort nor money on self-training, hardware or software. If you want to be in the front row you have to make the investment. No one piece of software is the ultimate. Software better software. You have to test them all, and select that software package which fits your brand of photography. You don't do software because your partner across the road who you admire is using it. Personally, I do not use the popular software. Though I am tempted to try out Lightroom, and may give it a try before Christmas 2011. I do not waste my time on photo restoration and serious retouching, those scans go off to someone in Brazil. Small prints on paper are made downtown Basseterre by Harpers Bookstore. All other enlargements, posters, street banners, etc can be printed in house on the HP wide format printer. If it makes you happy your image could be outsourced to North America or if  on a budget to a Caribbean printer. It may not be in our Caribbean psyche to outsource.

Success in photography, as you perceive it, in our corner of the globe, can depend on whether "you do, or you don't".
