How can we fix this
Greetings.
May you continue to prosper and be in great health for 2018.
This will not be my one and only post for this year. There are many things that we need to address in our bright and beautiful skn. Maybe my pictures can help to remind us that we are not an island unto ourselves. I am not getting into any long explanation, and if you find the picture I post not to your taste, you have a problem with it, please go and watch someone else picture, and have yourself a nice day.
Recently I am spending my time on the Bay Road and viewing the action in the Bay. I can see Port Zante from where I live up on the hillside, but someone built a 3 storey house on Sprott Street and blocked my view. No problem. I planned to build a 'charlie breadfruit tower' in my backyard but the cost is prohibitive, so I have gone to plan B. Taking the short 7 minutes walk down to the Bay Road.
From the Bay Road I can view all the action in the Bay, from the West side of Port Zante down to Fisherman's Wharf. I also enjoy the soothing sounds of the sea. The only thing to disturb you is the occasional bus going up or down, and they pass so quickly that sometimes you don't even hear them. Sometimes I even see some pretty women taking a dip in the Irish Town Bay.
You may think that it is the same mile of beach and nothing changes from day to day, but you are mistaken, because in skb/skn no two days are ever alike. Every second the scene changes, but everyone cannot feel it or see it. Maybe it comes with a oneness with the environment. Maybe one just have to be more appreciative of everything in general. Maybe you are now wondering where I am going with this, and I am glad that you asked.
The Bay Front is the show piece of our Cruise Tourism product. I think that I used the wrong words and terminology. The Bay Front is one of the first places that 'a few' cruise tourists see. They all see it from a distance, and it is beautiful ... and they have to return here a few years later. Most cruise visitors catch a safari and go on tour, some visit the City Center and Independence Square, and some do not even leave the confines of Port Zante. I am told that they are advised on many cruise ships not to go off Port Zante.
But some cruise visitors want to visit the Palms activity and action at the Fortlands. So they walk along the Bay Road. Some notice the cesspools caused by College Street/Ghaut and Westbourne Street/Ghaut and some don't. Some snap it, some don't. They are only here for a few hours, no problem.
But unfortunately I am not here for a few hours, but for a lifetime. And so are all the citizens of Central Basseterre and of these islands. Many of our Nationals residing overseas are appalled at these two cesspools, one on either side of the place where FOOD and DRINKS are offered to people, citizens and visitors alike. A few of us here are upset that nothing can be done to eliminate these cesspools, that can CONTAMINATE the people of Central Basseterre, and ALL those persons who use the Bus and Ferry terminal .... between these cesspool.
Every problem has a solution. But no solution seems to be available for these cesspools. Maybe we need to get someone from the USA or UK to provide a solution. My unqualified layman solution for the Westbourne Ghaut cesspool is to fill it in with beach sand. Get a backhoe and fill it in. No hole, no pool. For college Street Ghaut, just keep the channel clear. If this don't work then bring in someone from the big country to tell us in this small country what to do. It is unfortunate that we do not have qualified people here to fix these issues. What have we come to now.
For this year I have decided that every time I pass the cesspools I will snap them, so you can see how our skb is coming day by day. On one hand it is coming great, new building installed, old buildings coming down, but these two cesspools on the Bay Road, at Port Zante beach growing stinker by the day. This is not the SKB that we know. This is not the skb that we all love. Something has definitely gone wrong. How can we fix this???
This is my January post. Let us watch our skb and see how it a go.
Have a wonderful day, enjoy skb like a tourist.
