never to old to learn

You are never to old to learn, if you want to. At my tender age of three score  plus I am still learning photography because I want to. Over the last year I learned to use high and higher ISO speeds and I still have to consult the authoritative works to see what the experts say just to ensure that I am doing the correct things and to fine tune that photographic process. But I sometimes wonder if it is necessary to consult with the "experts" when you have already established some rules based on your practical results. The making of a successful end product. Well if I have time later I will consult not just for knowledge sake, but there might be some hints, tips and tricks that I could top off and sweeten this high ISO photographic cake with. Coming from the days of film we know what high ISO is all about, notwithstanding the experimental work done on dilute developer and fast films back then. Kodak even developed a 3200 ISO film and chemicals, which produced very good result...

20 more years with Canon

Image
2010 begins my third photographic cycle. In 1968 I acquired my first SLR camera, a Pentax Spotmatic and a Sunpak Flash, that started me on a journey which still has no end in sight. 21 years later I am at a photographic crossroad and makes a wise decision to step away from Pentax in favour of Canon. Canon offered the new photo quality that I needed to take my photography to the next level. A couple Canon T-90's, one for the studio the other for the bag saw me through until the EOS-1 was launched. During this  20-year cycle I move up, in, around, and about, and finally ended up home, and retired. So I am retired and during this time one is expected to stay out of trouble, so it is fishing and everything else, and not bikini watching on the beach. Next thing my neighbour is getting married and I am invited to the wedding. Of course I am going, but I have never gone to a wedding as a guest before, always as a photographer, so I have to go with a camera in hand or I am naked. Long st...

done with this last minute scramble

It is hard to steer away from things carnival since the October launch, because like it or not, carnival is now at the back of everyones mind, and for some of us it is stuck hard onto the front until next year January. I know some people already dreaming about who they jamming with for Jouvert, boy, imagination is a hell-of-a-thing. We all have our imagination, and fantasize we all did as youths. Some things we were able to precipitate into our environment, and some we were not. It is a pity that what we know now, we did not know then ... but maybe it was a good thing for some of us not to know then. Say one say two, it was still more fun living back then, that it is today, notwithstanding the tech world in which we now live. But more time for that talk. Make ready for carnival .... photographically. Check your cameras and stuff now. I am not addressing this to all those photographers who know that I don't mean them, but to the ordinary folks who have a digital camera in a b...

carnival come, again

Image
Some days you have it in to blog, and you know where you want to go, but you are not quite sure how to get there. I am learning from our young leaders of tomorrow, that this is not a problem, you just just right in the middle, do your thing and who vex 'dead'. I am carefully choosing which youthful traits to adopt in order to ensure my sustained connectivity in their world. Speaking about adopting, did you see the 'senior citizens' troupe in the carnival launch? This carnival look like it is going to be different, with women now running it along with the few token men just so maybe people won't talk. I truly wish them every success with the 2010/2011 National Carnival. Here it is about photography so the other side to my carnival comments may come later on my wordpress blog. No I am not dissing anyone, just making some observations, as it is my right to do so, and also yours, if you can. The problem here is that nobody listens to those people who live and lime und...

10-10-10

Image
I am not reading as much as I should these days so I not up to date on all of the issues that annoy people in our world today, but I gather that today is hailed by some as a special day in our history. So what happened last year, 09-09-09, and what can we expect to happen next year 11-11-11, and if the world is supposed to end in 2012, what of 12-12-12? I wonder what people were saying at 10-10-10, back in 1910? We have come an exceptionally long way since then, so we cannot begin to think what it will be like 100 years on in 2110. Mind boggling, ain't it?. Well, don't let it bother you, but if just thinking about it is making you nervous, try find solace in communicating with your GOD ... before it is too late. I think the sun will rise today, on schedule, so will the tides, the birds, the bees and all living things, and I wonder how many of them have a concern that today is 10-10-10, and what more they need to do to 'survive' on their planet. They are the embodiment...

a small step for home studio

Image
I have finally come around. After inventing all kinds of excuses why I would not get into 'people' photography again, I have been persuaded, more like encouraged, or motivated, to rescue and retrieve my studio lamps from storage. A studio lamp is a studio lamp and as long as it can be triggered it is good to go until such times as.  So what can go wrong with a studio lamp? For one thing some of the 1970 components may need replacing and the product's manufacturer may be missing in the recession. I can recall a little something about electronics, and should be able to "fix" the lights from parts in my ham radio junk box, and if I need help, I have a few friends with nimble fingers. I also recall having  at least five [5] brand name studio lamps by Bowens/Bogen, and I will totally disregard the batch of small 'dolly' flash lamps if I find them. The studio lamp is the main component in the studio lighting system, but maybe equally important is a reliable fl...

VAT Carnival 2010/2011 coming up

Life is great ... for those of us who can find the time to see and discover the greatness, in this beautiful world of ours. The world is beautiful ... but that is a different story. In reality maybe 'great' does not truly describe 'life', neither does 'beautiful' do justice to the 'world'. I believe both life and the world only exist as we wish to see them or perceive them, and maybe if we 'concentrate' hard enough we can alter their reality. This is beginning to sound more crazy than complicated. In case you did not know there are more of 'them' out there, than there are 'locked up', to keep us safe from 'them' ... maybe in another reality it is to keep 'them' safe from 'us'. That is why I like the cannibals ... eat your enemy and anything that offends you. If you can't eat it raw, roast it. I don't think I am one of the 'them', and I am not 'locked up', and in this reality I am jus...
