Outside again
Greetings
It has been a while since we blogged here, but we are outside again.
The world has dramatically changed in a few short years. Some of us are still awaiting an apparent appropriate and convenient time to restart our business, and other stages of our life and living. In our area of the Caribbean region almost all of us are outside again, and all borders are open for travel and business. It is not so in other areas of the world, and we hope and pray that it would not be long before everything is back to normal. Technology is not waiting for humans, and the developers and inventors are stepping into otherwise new and uncharted areas of software development.
The move to mirrorless cameras continue. I can see the move of some photographers to upgrade to the latest technology. Feedback seem to indicate that many first time photographers are getting high level mirrorless cameras, and without reading the camera manuals, have mixed results and comments. The entry level mirrorless camera is a significant upgrade to a dslr. The incompatibility of camera and lens systems do not make it easier, and I am talking about Canon, the undisputed world leader in camera sales.
I am a Canon user since 1989. Slow and steady always win the race, and that is why the best mirrorless camera in the world is a Canon. And Canon has not even released their 'flagship' mirrorless camera as yet. Canon is doing a great job of maintaining their prices comparable to the past DSLR cameras, now being replaced by mirrorless systems. The DSLR cameras are available at the best price ever, for those who need to get into some aspect of professional photography on a budget. But photography is not all about hardware, nor software, but about the person of the photographer and all that he or she brings to the craft and to the session.
I do not know what our local photographic industry is like now following the pandemic. I have not been interacting with local photographers for a while, but I suspect that the same problems exist after the pandemic, and may even have escalated and compounded. The pandemic would cause prices to rise, widen the gap between the haves and the have nots. This is just life. Some photographers will go under and some will go over. Every photographer has to develop their own personal photography survival plan.
Photographers should always seek to be the best that they can be, giving the best possible service to customers and clients. Pandemic, pre and post are two different animals. What worked before will not work now. Many things have changed and are changing. The foregoing looked at photography with a money making flavour, but for many of us photography is a hobby, we do it for the love. There is no limit to what we can and cannot make and take. But one thing we must always have ready is a PRICE LIST for any service that someone may wish to engage. You may be in the right place, at the right time, but unprepared for the opportunity that presents itself. Do not be caught off guard. Remember this.
Every month, take one of your best images, make an enlargement, whatever size suits you best, frame it and display it in your best space. When you appreciate yourself, others will appreciate you.
The picture above was made last week Saturday April 29th as British Airways crossed my view on its approach to RL Bradshaw International Airport.
